Geographical indications (GIs) are a type of intellectual property right that protect products with a specific geographical origin and qualities or a reputation that are essentially attributable to that origin. One well-known example is Champagne, a sparkling wine that can only be labeled as such if it originates from the Champagne region of France. Another example in Indonesia is Kopi Arabika Gayo, which refers to Arabica coffee beans grown in the Gayo Highlands of Aceh. These indications help consumers identify authentic products and support local producers by preventing misuse of the geographical name for products that do not meet the required standards.
